Those who know me well (and maybe even those who don’t) know that I am a bit of a closet Trekkie (please bear with me as there will be a lot of Trek references sprinkled throughout this blog, I promise I’ll try not to make it boring!).
Star Trek has been a part of my life since I was a pre-teen (and for those interested, my favourite series was and still is Voyager and I will happily die on this hill). Although I didn’t know it at the time, I was drawn in by the strong female role models, the sense of belonging and the inherent acceptance of others; no matter if they were black, white or green.
As I’ve gone through life, it has remained with me – what you might call my ‘comfort show’. I know, without doubt, that if I’m ever feeling lost or uncertain, I will be provided with unity, hope and empathy – all just a click away.
However, if we are to look at this through a more therapeutic, philosophical and social science lens, many themes and messages from Star Trek are applicable in real life.
For example – the phrase ‘live long and prosper’ 100% symbolises more than just a logical Vulcan greeting. It provokes a reflection on living life – really living life – in a fulfilled and holistic way, taking into account health and wellbeing in all its forms; physical, mental, social, emotional, creative.
To live long is more than just to exist for a long time, right? It’s about thriving. Just as Vulcans seek harmony and balance – we too can endeavour to achieve a lifestyle that nurtures the mind, body and ‘soul’, for as long as we inhabit ourselves (and this planet).
The idea of prospering also gives us pause for reflection – to grow and move beyond survival. To thrive. To embrace. To prosper. As a psychotherapist, I regularly encourage clients to explore their passions, develop meaningful experiences and relationships, and to really tap into what their own idea of ‘purpose’ is.
So, ‘live long and prosper’ isn’t just an alien phrase from a distant galaxy. It’s a simple, timeless commentary on how we can live our lives (on earth or wherever!).
For one final nerdy addition – I wish you…peace and long life
